The pandemic started conversations around work-life balance, and we’re not complaining! Organisations are taking work culture seriously, and making efforts to improve their employees’ wellbeing. If you’re managing a team and care about everyone’s work-life balance, or an individual curious to find that balance between working and enjoying life, you may want to read what we have to share.

What is work-life balance?

Simply put, worklife balance is the ability to balance work responsibilities with personal interests and obligations. It is a way of life that helps you enjoy personal growth because it gives you time to explore your hobbies and interests, leaves you with time for self care, and in turn lets you be productive and efficient in your professional life. It focuses on rest and rejuvenation as much as it focuses on productivity and results. In fact, work-life balance is what tells you that rest is productive.

Why is worklife balance important?

Work-life balance dictates how you will live your professional as well as personal life. When you are able to find a healthy balance, you are less likely to experience stress, anxiety, and burnout. You are also more likely to be happy and productive at work, and have a better overall quality of life because you get time to take care of yourself too.

How does one cultivate worklife balance?

Work-life balance doesn’t have to be intimidating. It requires you to do small changes, be consistent in practicing them, and slowly move towards enjoying a good quality of life. It requires patience and perseverance.

Here are a few things you can do to incorporate work-life balance into your life.

Set boundaries

It is important to set boundaries between your work life and your personal life. This means not checking work emails or taking work calls outside of work hours. It also means taking time for yourself each day to relax and unwind. It may seem intimidating at first, but break it down into smaller steps. Organise your day into time-slots that help you dedicate time for both work and play. Communicate your boundaries effectively.

Take breaks

It is important to take breaks throughout the day, even if it is just for a few minutes. Get up and move around, step outside for some fresh air, or close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Tune into a calming story on a mindfulness app. Listen to some music. Taking breaks can help reduce stress and improve focus.

Take time for yourself

Spend time reading, cooking, dancing or doing whatever it is that makes you happy. Pursue a hobby, connect with family and friends, identify what relaxes you and indulge yourself in those activities. A well-rested body and mind can increase your productivity and efficiency by tenfold!

Practice self awareness

Be mindful of your thoughts and feelings, and pay attention to how you are feeling throughout the day. Learn to be aware of any negative thoughts or feelings that are arising. When you become aware of negative thoughts, challenge them and replace them with positive ones. Give yourself a break if you are feeling too overwhelmed. Taking a break can help you to recharge and come back to work feeling refreshed and motivated.

Eat well, sleep well, move and stay hydrated!

Aim for 7 hours of sleep on a daily basis. In healthy adults, 30% of the sleep should be a good quality deep sleep, which is about 105-120 minutes. Establish a sleep routine that helps you fall asleep easily. Avoid alcohol consumption before sleep if possible.

Also keep hydration and nutrition in check in order to feel good. Good nutrition and hydration helps you feel energetic and decreases chances of mood swings, and keeps general body aches and pains at bay too!

Take time out to meal-prep if you have busy days. If you’re cooking on a daily basis, aim at getting your macros and avoid processed foods as much as you can.

Set aside 30 minutes on a daily basis to move! Movement can look like a short walk, a jog, a dance class, a session at the gym, yoga, or just about anything that you enjoy!
